Social Media Terms You Should Know

Social media has taken over the world, and it is crucial for industry professionals to understand the terminology used on these platforms, which have become such a big part of our lives.

The terminology used on social media platforms can be confusing, I for one am still not sure if it is still called a tweet since the platform changed its name to X.

So, instead of constantly googling what the social media terms are and what they mean, we’ve put together some terminology you should definitely know.

Algorithm

This uses a set of rules to determine how and what content is shown to each user.

Boosted Post

These are promoted posts that have been paid for to reach a wider audience.

Bot Followers

These are fake and automated accounts that are used to "boost" an account's followers.

Clickbait

This term is used to describe misleading / manipulative headlines that are purely created for clicks.

Cross-Posting

When one social media post is shared across various platforms it is known as cross-posting.

Deinfluencing

This is a trend on social media, where influencers are telling people not to buy certain things because they do not need it.

Shadowban

When someone goes against a social media platform's community guidelines, they can become shadowbanned. This means that the user's content is not reaching their normal audience, and the user isn’t always aware that they have been shadowbanned.

Thread

A thread is a series of connected social media posts, usually used when someone is telling a story.
